INTO THE VOIDS AND VANISHING POINTS: SPACESHIP EARTH AND SPACE AGE MEDIA THEORY

Forthcoming in the Proceedings of the 2011 McLuhan's Philosophy of Media Conference, to be published by the Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium for Science and the Arts.

Summary:

This paper and presentation showed how artists, scientists, technologists, and humankind have responded to the utopian "space age media theory" of President Kennedy and Marshall McLuhan: 1) showing earth as insignificant and disappearing into the vanishing points of the vast cosmos, 2) by pretending we are the center of everything via social media, 3) by committing "cosmic doublethink" in the embrace of what Orwell termed a "dual system of astronomy."
